The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read by Rita Lorriane Hubbard and illustrated by Oge Mora

Chosen by students in Mesquite ISD as well as 63,331 students from across the state of Texas, this is truly an award winning book! Each student read at least five Texas Bluebonnet books in order to vote. In our district 1,513  students read over 7,565 books before voting for their favorite. This inspirational story follows the life of Mary Walker, born in 1848 into slavery and freed at age 15. At age 116 she learned to read, proving that with perseverance and dedication you are never too old to learn.
